The basic idea of this thematic cycle was to create a dark mood with deep perspective in a rugged landscape, based on several quick sketches and before I had even set the focus on the theme of light.
The more light I took out of the idea and the darker the topic became, the more I occupied myself with the topic of light and how colors of light are created, what we actually see and why light actually refracts in a prism.
So why does light refract in a prism? From a purely physical point of view, the double refraction of light due to the geometry of a prism is the reason for this. The entry and exit into and out of media and materials of different densities changes the direction of the different wavelengths of light and as a result we see a colorful spectrum of these wavelengths.
This is exactly the effect I wanted in
take up the cycle of themes and depict the moment of refraction. To dramatize this, I chose a symbol that not only stands for connection or unity, but also for rupture, violence and inequality. I think the cross leaves a lot of room for interpretation in this context and brings tension in terms of content. To stay true to the theme of light and refraction, I executed the "broken" beam of light in strong contrast in the primary colors. In contrast, the beam of the cross is held in a neon color that cannot be mixed with the three primary colors. This work is full of contrasts and contradictions and leads me back to the initial question:
Why does light refract in a prism?
Future works in this thematic cycle will be darker, as I return to one of the sub-questions based on the original idea:
What do we actually see?
